Misalkan kita menaruh sebuah titik P pada lingkaran, yang berlokasi di busur (sudut) tertentu. Sudut referensi adalah sudut yang dibentuk antara OP dengan sumbu X. Besar sudut referensi akan selalu berada di antara 0° hingga 90°.
